A clear diagnosis. A steady plan. Care from home.

Bipolar disorder, once called manic depression, causes distinct episodes of mania or hypomania and depression that go beyond ordinary ups and downs. Because it is often mistaken for depression, anxiety, or ADHD, a careful evaluation comes before any treatment plan. Based in College Station, Ruhwell Med provides bipolar disorder treatment by video to patients across Texas.
Every evaluation starts with a detailed mood history: current and past episodes, periods of unusually elevated or irritable mood, depression, changes in sleep and energy, and how symptoms affect home, school, work, and relationships.
We also screen for conditions that can mimic or overlap with bipolar disorder, including depression, anxiety, ADHD, substance use, thyroid problems, and medication effects. Antidepressants alone can sometimes trigger mania, so an accurate diagnosis leads to safer, more effective care.
Bipolar disorder is grouped into three main types based on the pattern and severity of mood episodes. Your psychiatric evaluation clarifies which one, if any, fits.
At least one manic episode, often with periods of depression. Mania can bring elevated or irritable mood, little need for sleep, racing thoughts, and impulsive or risky behavior.
At least one hypomanic episode and one major depressive episode, without full mania. Hypomania is milder, but the depressive episodes can be long and disabling.
Ongoing shifts between hypomanic and depressive symptoms that don’t meet full episode criteria but persist for at least two years in adults, or one year in children and teens.
Bipolar disorder involves two kinds of mood episodes. Symptoms last for days to weeks at a time and are a clear change from your usual self.
Bipolar disorder is diagnosed clinically, based on the pattern of mood episodes over time.

Evaluation may include screening questionnaires, mood charting, prior records, and input from family or partners when appropriate. Many people first seek care during depression, so we ask about past highs as well as lows.
Can I get a bipolar disorder evaluation online in Texas?
Yes. Ruhwell Med offers bipolar disorder evaluations and ongoing care by video for children 6+, teens, and adults who are located in Texas at the time of their visit.
Is bipolar disorder the same as depression?
No. Both include depressive episodes, but bipolar disorder also involves episodes of mania or hypomania. The difference matters because bipolar depression is treated differently from depression alone.
Is medication needed for bipolar disorder?
For most people, yes. Medication is a core part of treatment, alongside regular monitoring, healthy sleep and routines, and therapy when appropriate. We review options, benefits, and side effects with you.
Can bipolar disorder be managed long term?
Yes. Bipolar disorder is a long-term condition, but many people achieve lasting stability with consistent treatment, regular follow-up, and early attention to warning signs.
What are the early signs of bipolar disorder?
Early signs can include needing much less sleep without feeling tired, unusual energy or irritability, racing thoughts, rapid speech, and impulsive spending or decisions, often alternating with periods of depression. If you notice these patterns, an evaluation can help clarify what is going on.
